For »Zeitsprung« a new program format for NDR (North German TV) looking at future themes in society, graphic designers Melanie Spintig and Florian Stumpe came up with fascinating openers that leave the viewer wondering: How on earth did they do that!

The two creatives perfectly match each other in terms of their respective skills: Melanie Spintig has extensive experience in photography, paper art and stop motion animation, while Florian Stumpe’s expertise lies in art direction and motion design (2D/3D). We talked to them both about the complex challenges of this project.

Martin Woelke and Ole Peters founded Sehsucht back in 2000 in Hamburg. Now with an offshoot in Berlin, this successful studio produces creative commercials that could hardly be more diverse. There are animations with paper, digital fantasy scenes and combinations of digital and analogue elements – a glance at their website gives insights into the exciting stories behind the finished spots. Our correspondent Peter Jaitner spoke to Daniel Jahnel (Head of 3D) and Hans-Christoph Schultheiss (Creative Director) of Sehsucht.

Salon Alpin

It’s not just Helmut Kohl and Boris Yeltsin that cemented their friendship in a sauna: Phillip Comarella and Simon Griesser also got to know each other in the steam room. In fact it was there that their first idea for a film was born. This idea became the foundation stone for the visual production and animation studio Salon Alpin, renowned for its storytelling and flexibility.

Don Perro

In an age when 3D-CGI animation is gaining ground on all fronts, our correspondent Jürgen Keuneke takes a look at what’s happening in the world of 2D animation. He talked about this to Don Perro, Program Coordinator and Instructor in 2D animation at the Capilano University in Vancouver.

Henry Hobson

Film-maker and designer Henry Hobson creates trailers for TV series, films and video games. He has worked, for example, on »Sherlock Holmes«, »Snow White and the Huntsman« and »The Walking Dead«, and produced a whole series of graphics for the Oscars announcements. We talked to the designer from the English town of Salisbury about his views on what makes a successful trailer and how it feels to develop ideas for the most important film awards in the world.
